Frequently asked questions

Answers about Kyalulu pricing, hardware, local storage, phone access, character imports and memory in the public alpha.

At a glance

  • The local code is open source under AGPL-3.0-only. External APIs and other costs may still apply.
  • The mobile PWA and Remote require a running PC. They do not run an LLM on the phone or generate offline.
  • Imports and memory have defined limits; they do not guarantee every original feature or perfect recall.

Is Kyalulu free?#

The local application code is open source under AGPL-3.0-only. Running it may still involve external API charges, electricity and hardware costs. CharacterBench code and its newly authored corpus are separately MIT licensed. The name, mascot and icons are excluded from the code license.

Distinguish plans for cloud services and distribution from the published local version. These docs describe scope supported by the public GitHub materials.

What kind of PC do I need?#

Source installation requires Python 3.11+, uv, Node.js 20+ and pnpm 10+. Real-model memory and GPU requirements depend on model size, quantization, context length and the inference engine. Large models are not guaranteed to run on every PC.

Check the setup with Mock Echo first, then configure a model connection. Mock Echo verifies connectivity, not character quality.

Does the local version send conversations outside my PC?#

The runtime stores the authoritative conversations, characters and memories locally. A local model and an external OpenAI-compatible API have different destinations. If you choose an external API, information required for generation, including the prompt, is sent to its provider.

External Hub searches and public URL imports also involve network access. See data storage and privacy for details.

Can I use only a phone?#

The documented PWA and Remote connect to a running PC or personal server. They do not run an LLM on the phone or automatically switch to cloud inference when the PC stops. Installing the PWA does not enable offline response generation.

Choose between the PWA installation and Remote without PC port forwarding. Physical Android testing and other release requirements remain open.

Can I bring characters from SillyTavern or Character.AI?#

Character Card JSON, PNG and CHARX, plus SillyTavern presets and Lorebooks, are supported. Character.AI uses manual settings paste; it is not automatic account retrieval or a dedicated full-history migration.

A supported format does not reproduce every feature of the original application. Check the import guide and compatibility matrix.

Will it remember every conversation forever?#

Memory Lab stores, retrieves and corrects selected memories. It is off by default and does not keep every utterance in the model context indefinitely. Response quality and recall have limits. Inspect important memories and correct them manually when needed.

The memory guide explains sharing scope, proposals awaiting confirmation and corrections.
